Iyengar Yoga, devised by B.K.S. Iyengar and refined over his lifetime, is a system of hatha yoga postures (asana) and breathing (pranayama) for people of all ages, abilities, and walks of life. The Iyengar system focuses on classic postures with a deep awareness of correct alignment and precise actions that increase flexibility and strengthen weak areas with systemic sequences that awaken and align the whole Body, Mind and Spirit connection.
This therapeutic method is appropriate for anyone — regardless of age, degree of health or limitations — and increases your ability to focus, observe, be present and relax.
In this workshop we will discuss the origins and philosophy of the Iyengar system followed by a 90-minute asana (posture) practice. This workshop and class is suitable for any level of student.
Introduction to Ayurveda
Ayurveda is the Indian Holistic Medical System which has been practiced continuously for over 5000 years and is the sister science to Yoga. Ayurveda explains how our interrelationship with nature’s cycles, rhythms and patterns affect our daily lives & how simple lifestyle changes can bring true health, balance and wellness.
In this workshop we will discuss the ancient relationship between Yoga and Ayurveda including Indian history, philosophy and mythology. We will cover the basic Ayurvedic principles including: the five elements, the mental & physical gunas, the three doshas, prakruti “constitution” and vikruti “current state of health”, and the Ayurvedic pyramid of health including pancha karma and the five sense therapies.
This workshop is a lecture and is suitable for any level of practitioner.
Jeff Perlman began his exploration and studies of yoga in 1989 as a result of stress from a high-powered executive restaurant career and injuries suffered from running the New York marathon. Wanting to shift his focus inward, he explored many different schools of yoga, until finding the Iyengar system. The focus on the integration of mind, body & spirit had a profound influence on his awareness, presence of mind & ability to balance the various aspects of his daily life.
To deepen his understanding of yoga, after several years of practice at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of Los Angeles, in 2005 he enrolled in their three-year teacher-training program, and has been teaching ever since. In 2007 and 2009, as part of his education, he studied in Pune, India with the Iyengar family at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) & is currently a Certified Level II instructor.
While studying anatomy, he developed an interest in Ayurveda (The Indian Holistic Medical System). The relationship between the basic energies of the universal elements, the physical gunas in our environment & the energetics of the food, spices & herbs is a natural complement to his experience as an executive chef. Jeff graduated from the California College of Ayurveda in Nevada City in 2010 & is certified as a Clinical Ayurvedic & Pancha Karma Specialist with advanced accreditation in Pulse Diagnosis, Marma Therapy & Herbology.
Jeff is a professional member of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association & The California Association of Ayurvedic Medicine. He is certified as a Massage Therapist from the California Massage Therapies Council. His ongoing work as a corporate executive chef is informed by his knowledge & practice of the ancient science of Ayurveda.
